River Sites
Carclew’s 2007 River Sites Project was held in Waikerie in the Riverland region of South Australia. The project worked in collaboration with students from Waikerie High Schools Indigenous Representative Council. Developing the theme “Harmony – People and the environment; Past Present and Future!” the 17 predominantly Indigenous students from Waikerie High School designed and manufactured a mosaic wall mural to adorn the school canteen. The students worked under the guidance and mentorship of local Artist Stephen Schubert, and mosaic artist Michael Tye.
The students worked from a specially set up empty shop-front studio at shop 1/7 Peake Terrace, Waikerie, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout Term 2, so that residents of Waikerie could watch the progress of the mosaic mural over the period of the project. The final mosaic design – a large rain moth, or weikari moth, which appears around this region after heavy rains. The name weikari is an indigenous word for ‘many wings’ and it is from this word that the town of Waikarie derives its name.
The River Sites project is held in a nominated region for 2-3 years. Previously River Sites has supported projects in Streaky Bay (2001), Mount Gambier (2002), Penola (2003), Winkie (2004), Berri (2005), Glossop (2006), and Berri in 2008.
